GERRY ADAMS SAYS BREXIT HAS MADE CALLS FOR IRISH UNITY 'MORE PREVALENT'

Gerry Adams took a parting shot at the UK today as he claimed Brexit had made calls for Irish unity 'more prevalent'.
The Sinn Fein President ends his political career on Saturday as he hands over his post after 34 years.
Amid growing tension in the Brexit negotiations over the future state of Northern Ireland, Mr Adams insisted his party would continue to campaign for a united Ireland.
Mr Adams, suspected of being an IRA commander at the height of the Troubles, also claimed to regret it took until 1994 for the first ceasefire.
His departure is a landmark moment as the last of the major players behind the 1997 Good Friday Agreement to leave the political stage.
In a valedictory interview before stepping down, Mr Adams said: 'I'm not saying there is a direct correlation between Brexit and Irish unity, and in fact I think those of us who want a united Ireland need to be very careful that we are not accused of trying to exploit Brexit.
'But I just think the notion of Irish unity, in terms of public debate, is now much more prevalent.
'We want to see a referendum on Irish unity as part of the Good Friday Agreement.
'We are going to continue to campaign for that and we also want to win that.'
