Man held after widow's appeal
A 20-year-old man was arrested by detectives today investigating the death of a father-of-two who was killed after chasing two car thieves.
Kevin Jackson, 31, was attacked near his home in Halifax, West Yorkshire, on Sunday and died in hospital on New Year's Day.
He had given chase after disturbing two men apparently trying to steal his father-in-law's car.
Mr Jackson was found with five wounds to his head, probably caused by a screwdriver-type implement.
Yesterday, his wife Julie made an emotional appeal for help to find his killers.
Police said they received more than 70 calls following Mrs Jackson's plea and as a result of information received today arrested a man in Bradford.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "As a result of some information received inquiries took place earlier today in Bradford and a 20-year-old man was arrested.
"We've also recovered a car. Further positive lines are being pursued this morning."
Superintendent Bob Bridgestock, who is leading the inquiry, said he was "extremely pleased" by the response to yesterday's appeal and said a number of callers had named individuals.
Officers have been targeting known car criminals since Mr Jackson was fatally injured in the early hours of Sunday morning.
He had given chase after his wife spotted two men attempting to take her parents' Toyota car.
As she phoned the police Mr Jackson ran after the two offenders.
A passing taxi driver then discovered Mr Jackson, battered and bleeding, lying in the road. He was rushed to hospital but never regained consciousness.
Yesterday Mrs Jackson broke down in tears as she described how she had broken the news to the couple's eldest son, Jake, seven, as they visited her husband in hospital.
She said she told him his father was a hero.
Mr Jackson also leaves another son, 15-month old Thomas.
Within hours of 33-year-old Mrs Jackson's appeal, a number of new witnesses came forward.
Mr Bridgestock said his team had received calls from as far away as London.
Mr Bridgestock confirmed his officers were now looking for two other men in Bradford and warrants had been issued for their arrest.
The man who was arrested earlier is being questioned at a police station in West Yorkshire.
