Plans unveiled for giant wind farm
Plans were being unveiled today for a massive wind farm on a Hebridean island that could produce as much energy as a nuclear power station.
If the project gets the go-ahead it could see the construction of more than 250 huge turbines on Lewis, off the west coast of Scotland.
Discussions between British Energy and US company Amec about the project have been on going for several months.
Last month energy minister Brian Wilson announced a feasibility study into a subsea cable stretching from the Western Isles to the south west of England to carry renewable energy and link it to the national grid.
The proposals have been welcomed by environmental group Friends of the Earth.
Scottish chief executive Kevin Dunion said such a project would "harness Scotland's wind resource, which is the best in Europe".
However he said it was important "natural heritage interests" were not damaged.
