Robbers left in the sauce
Police arrested four men suspected of robbing a Chinese takeaway delivery driver after following a trail of curry sauce to their door, officers said today.
West Midlands Police said the driver was struck over the head with a large bag of prawn crackers as he walked across the ground floor at a block of flats in Fairview Court, Western Avenue, Bentley, Walsall.
Inspector Ian Grundy said the attackers then grabbed the meals and bolted to a second floor flat, but unwittingly left a trail of sauce which seeped out of the containers.
He added: "Unfortunately for them, a portion of curry sauce seeped out of one of the containers as they were making off with it and we were able to follow it to the door of one of the other flats in the block.
"I did not taste the sauce, so I cannot confirm what kind it was."
Mr Grundy said the four meals had been ordered by telephone from a Chinese takeaway in nearby Bloxwich on Saturday evening.
The driver had taken them to the designated address in Fairview Court, but having discovered the flat empty, was returning to his vehicle when he was ambushed.
The driver, who has not been named, was not seriously injured during the robbery.
Five men from the Bentley area of Walsall were today helping officers with their inquiries, Insp Grundy added.
