Josh Frydenberg is reportedly being protected by armed guards around-the-clock after being threatened over the COVID-19 economic crisis.

Australian Federal Police close protection officers have been shadowing the treasurer since the start of April, according to the West Australian newspaper.

Normally only the prime minister and the opposition leader receive 24/7 protection during an election campaign, although Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton is also guarded after receiving death threats from criminals and bikie gangs.

It is not clear why Mr Frydenberg may have received threats. Some Australians are angry that the JobKeeper policy to pay six million workers' wages does not apply to casual workers who have been with one employer for less than a year.

The treasurer did not deny the report when asked about it on ABC News this morning.

He said: 'They're matters the federal police handle and I will leave any comments to them and the minister for home affairs. You know, they make their assessments and I behave accordingly.'

The AFP declined to comment.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted the treasurer's officer for comment.
