Man shot in sectarian violence
A man was injured in a shooting as fresh sectarian trouble erupted in North Belfast today.
Police said he was taken to hospital after reports of shooting in the Limestone Road area. Local people said he was hit in the nearby Hallidays Road.
The man later underwent surgery in the Royal Victoria Hospital for what was believed to be a chest wound. His condition was not immediately known.
The shooting, and reports of more shots being fired in the area, came after rival factions clashed yet again.
Police said about 100 republicans and 50 loyalists had to be driven apart by police in full riot gear.
The groups had been pelting each other with missiles and there were unconfirmed reports of blast bombs being thrown.
An army bomb disposal team later defused an unexploded pipe bomb and made safe a large firework with shrapnel attacked. A third suspect proved to be a hoax.
