A great-grandmother 'doesn't want to live anymore' after she was savagely bashed by a stranger when she returned home from buying flowers.

Patricia, 84, was assaulted in broad daylight after entering her bedroom at Huon Park retirement village in North Turramurra in Sydney on Saturday at 12.30pm.

She had just returned home after buying flowers and fresh fruit to spruce up her apartment.

Patricia's daughter Caroline appealed to the attacker to turn himself in to police, and said her mother is in a 'bad way'.

'I feel so sad that my mum, who is 84, who's just lost her husband, is now in a position where she just doesn't want to be in this world anymore because she just feels so unsafe,' she said during a press conference.

'As you can imagine, this has been a very, very shocking and distressing event in our family.

'This should never ever happen to the most vulnerable of vulnerable in our community.'

Caroline said her mother is shocked this happened to her, and she now has to grieve the loss of her independence, safety and security.

The attack, described by police as 'appalling and cowardly', came after Patricia returned from a holiday with her daughters and granddaughters.

She and her family spent time at the Northern Lights in Finland before visiting her sister in Austria, and finishing the dream trip in London, 7 News reported.

She had only been living in the retirement village for six weeks, and had only spent three weeks there due to her overseas travel.

Caroline described her mother as a 'very eloquent, proud, wonderful human being' who loved spending time with her family.

After the horrific attack, Patricia was taken to Sydney Adventist Hospital in Wahroonga where she is still receiving treatment for injuries to her face, chest and arm.

Detectives from the Ku-ring-gai police area command established Strike Force Calculus to investigate the assault and home invasion.

On Tuesday detectives searched North Turramurra and spoke with the nursing home's elderly residents.

They are now appealing to the public for help.

Detective Chief Inspector Luke Spurr said the victim and her family were in a state of shock.

'This is an absolutely appalling and cowardly act and let me reassure you these type of offences are uncommon and that police are doing everything in their power to fully investigate this matter and to locate the offender,' he told reporters on Sunday.

Local resident Chris Griffith said he was shocked by what had happened.

'This is a very quiet village, one of the benefits of the place is that it's very secure, it is a concern for everyone,' he told Seven News.

Strike force detectives are looking for a man who was seen in the area at the time of the attack but is yet to be identified.

He is believed to be aged between 30 and 50, between 175 and 180cm tall and possibly of Asian or Indian sub-continental appearance.

The man had a medium build, brown eyes, dark hair and was clean shaven, wearing light pants, a jacket, button-up shirt and a tie at the time.
