Man and two women are killed after their small plane crashes into backyard of Philadelphia home

Three people have died after the small plane they were in crashed into the backyard of a suburban Philadelphia home.

The single-engine plane went down around 6.20am on Thursday in Willow Grove shortly after taking off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport.

Everyone onboard - one man and two women - were killed.

Upper Moreland Police Chief Michael Murphy says the plane hit several trees before it came to rest. 

No one on the ground was injured and no homes were damaged. 

Debris from the crash is spread across several backyards.

Police said there is no indication the pilot made a distress call before the crash.

The plane was en route to Columbus, Ohio but it's not clear if that was the plane's final destination. 

The Federal Aviation Administration is onsite.

The National Transportation Safety Board is also heading to the scene. 

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
