These are the terrifying scenes taken from inside a bus carrying 40 pilgrims as it's flipped through the air by a powerful tornado in Romania

The twister, the country's first in 17 years, threw the coach across a field as it ripped through the countryside, leaving a trail of wrecked houses in its wake.

Eight people on-board were injured in the incident on Wednesday afternoon near the small town of Drajna in the country's south.

In the footage, captured by one of the passengers, the bus drives towards the unusual, two-tone vortex which is making its way through a field by the side of the road.

As they get closer, the person recording suddenly loses control and is sent flying before the camera turns black.

People can be heard screaming and shouting 'Let's pray to the Lord! Worship our Lord!'

Ten houses were also ruined as the tornado obliterated everything in its path, after forming around 50 miles away from the country’s capital, Bucharest.

Experts explained that winds lifted dust and dirt from the field up into the air, which is why the bottom half of the tornado was darker than the upper half (shown from a different angle)

Eyewitnesses said the bus was thrown more than 30 feet by the ferocious vortex.

Shocking footage was captured by locals, with videos showing the tornado lifting dust into the air and its mighty image causing fear among many residents in the town of Drajane.

According to experts from the Romanian National Meteorology Agency (ANM), the tornado appeared when a cold atmospheric front collided with warm air.

They explained the winds lifted dust and dirt from the field up in the air, explaining why the bottom half of the tornado was darker than the upper half.

The last recorded twister in the country occurred in August 2002 in the county of Ialomita, and it damaged over 400 houses and killed a woman and child while 14 residents were also injured.
