An Arkansas man has been accused of killing his newborn son by punching him in the head.

Mark Lewis was arrested last Wednesday in connection to the death of his two-year-old son who was found dead in a Prairie Grove apartment.

Authorities said Lewis, 40, was home alone with the baby on March 26, while the infant's mother was still in the hospital following birth complications.

Lewis told police that he didn't have anyone to help him with the child and did not possess a cell phone, so he punched the baby out of frustration, according to KFSM.

The baby died shortly after being struck. Lewis then packed a bag and fled the scene.

Two days later, the mother returned to the apartment where she found her son dead, according to police.

Lewis was pulled over by officers for a traffic warrant.

While in custody, Lewis told police about his son's death, according to the station.

The baby was healthy and hadn't been sick nor did he have any other injury, according to Lewis.

Lewis was charged with first-degree murder. He's being held at the Washington County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond.

His next court appearance is set for April 26.
