Theresa May has not kept jewellery she was given by Donald Trump when he visited the UK, it was revealed today.
The US president and his wife Melania came to Britain over the summer for the first time since he entered the White House.
According to the latest 'transparency' information published by the government, they brought 'jewellery and a jewellery box' for the PM.
The exact nature of the present is still not known.
But it seems Mr Trump might have gone overboard in trying to demonstrate the continuing strength of the Special Relationship.
The disclosure reveals that Mrs May chose not to pay to keep the gifts herself - amid hints that they were simply too expensive.
It seems Donald Trump (pictured with Theresa May duringhis visit to the UK in July) might have gone overboard in trying to demonstrate the continuing strength of the Special Relationship
Under Whitehall rules, ministers can keep gifts up to the value of £140.
But above that they must be declared and if the politician wants to keep the present they must pay the balance above that sum.
The latest register for Mrs May states that the offering from the president in July was valued 'above limit', and 'held by the department' - the fate of anything ministers choose not to purchase with their own money.
No10 sources suggested the premier might have chosen not to hold on to the jewellery because it was 'some way over' the £140 threshold.
By contrast, she did opt to pay to keep some jewellery she was given by designer Mirta Frosini during the three months to September.
The visit by Mr Trump was thorny for Mrs May, and she did not skimp on presents for him and the First Lady.
She gave him a chart tracing his Scottish ancesrty back to his great, great, great grandfather Kenneth Macleod, who was born near Stornoway in 1776 - the year the US declared independence.
Downing Street said at the time that the present 'underlined the deep historical links that many modern-day Americans have with the United Kingdom'.
Mrs May gave Melania perfume by Floris London, the oldest independent family perfumer in the world having been established in 1730.
Princess Diana, Winston Churchill and Marilyn Monroe are said to be among those who have worn the firm's scents.
