Eight Brits have been arrested accused of brawling on a train and defecating on the train's floors during a stag do in Amsterdam.

The men were arrested at a station in the Dutch capital as they alighted from a high-speed Thalys train.

Police were waiting for them at the station after being tipped off by fellow passengers who reported that around 10 to 15 tourists were fighting on the train as it made its way to Amsterdam from Brussels.

Witnesses told local media that around 12 police officers came to Amsterdam Central Station to detain the Brits, and bundled them into waiting vans.

'The information was enough to detach a welcoming committee on the platform,' a police spokesman said of the passengers' tip-off.

'We waited for the train and sealed off the surroundings to arrest all those involved.'

He added that as well as fighting, the Brits had apparently vandalised the train toilets.

'They also made four toilets unusable by defecating next to the toilet instead of in it. It was an unbelievable mess,' he said.

All eight British tourists are reported to be held on charges of assault, but it was not clear whether they were remanded in custody or freed on bail. 

It was not known whether any of the men were injured.
