What is National Cereal Day?
National Cereal Day is a celebration of America’s favorite breakfast food: cereal.
The event has gained traction in recent years as a way to promote healthy eating among Americans.
Up until the middle of the 19th century, most Americans had a relatively poor breakfast diet in the morning, consisting mainly of sausages, bacon, ham, eggs and potatoes. This meat-centric diet led to health problems for many 19th century Americans. In the latter half of the 1800s, cereal emerged as a healthier alternative.
The first manufactured cereal in the United States was invented in 1863 by James Caleb Jackson. In 1877, brothers Will Keith Kellogg and John Harvey Kellogg created their famous brand of cereal – by accident. They left a batch of boiled wheat out overnight and returned in the morning to find that each wheat berry had formed its own flake. They then used the same process for flakes of corn, thus inventing their famous Kellogg’s Corn Flakes cereal that remains popular to this day.
Since then, many other brands of cereal have grown in popularity and remain staples of the American breakfast diet to his day.
