'I think they call it mansplaining': May lashes Corbyn at PMQs for announcing to her that International Women's Day is tomorrow

  • Labour MPs shouted  in protest at the remark from the Prime Minister

Theresa May today accused Jeremy Corbyn of mansplaining to her in the Commons after he announced it would be International Women's Day tomorrow.

The Prime Minister fired her barb after Mr Corbyn tried to link the visit of Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince to the event marking the movement for women's rights.

Mrs May fired back: 'Can I thank you for telling me it is International Women's Day tomorrow - I think that's called mansplaining.' 

The jibe was greeted with howls of protest from Labour MPs and was ignored by Mr Corbyn as he tried to ask his second question at the weekly joust.

In his question, the Labour leader said: 'Tomorrow is International Women's Day, a chance to celebrate how far we've come..but also reflect on how far we have to go.

'Later today the PM is due to meet Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman...there has been a sharp increase in arrest and detention of dissidents, torture is common, unfair trials and executions are widespread, as Amnesty International confirms.

'As she makes her arms sales pitch, will she also call on the Corwn Prince to halt the shocking abuse of human rights in Saudi Arabia?' 

Mrs May fired back: 'First of all can I thank you for telling me it's International Women's Day tomorrow - I think that's what's called 'mansplaining'.'

'I look forward to welcoming Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman.

'The link we have with Saudi Arabia is historic, it is an important one and it has saved the lives of potentially hundreds of people in this country and can I say that actually that fact that it is an important link is not just the view that I hold - the Shadow Foreign Secretary (Emily Thornberry) said this morning - ''Our relationship with Saudi Arabia is an important one''.

'I welcome the fact that the Crown Prince will be sitting down with, as the guest of, a female prime minister.'
