Authorities have identified and charged the man who allegedly shot a woman in the legs after their date went awry on Wednesday night.
Belal S. Rhaimeh, 25, of Lee's Summit, Missouri, was charged with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action, according to documents released by the Jackson County District Attorney's office on Thursday.
Rhaimeh was identified by a woman who said that he shot her in both legs through her car door.
Belal S. Rhaimeh, 25, was arrested and charged after a woman, who has known him since childhood, said that he shot her in the legs after a date went wrong late Wednesday night
According to the probable cause statement included in the charging document, the woman, who has not been identified, told police that she and Rhaimeh — who she has known since they were children — met up at Zocalo at about 9pm in Kansas City, Missouri on Wednesday night.
The woman said that after leaving Zocalo, she got into Rhaimeh's car to drive over to nearby Dempsey's Burger Pub to meet up with friends. Along the way, she said that Rhaimeh starting shooting his handgun out of the window and tried to get her to do the same. She refused.
At Dempsey's, the woman said she told several groups of friends that she was afraid of Rhaimeh, but that they all left without helping her.
Because she needed a ride back to her own car, she got into Rhaimeh's car again, at which point she said that he asked if they were going to go back to her home. She said she only wanted to be dropped off where she'd parked her car because she had to work the next day.
Rhaimeh was charged with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action on Thursday. Prosecutors have asked for a $50,000 bond
The shooting took place several hours after the woman and Rhaimeh met up at Zocalo in Kansas City, Missouri
The woman said that after their date, Rhaimeh chased her around the parking lot in his car, eventually shooting her twice through her car door
Rahimeh then drove off, while she got out of her care, climbed a fence and went for help
In response, she said that Rhaimeh got mad at her and demanded her cell phone, saying that he was going to delete his number from her phone. The woman threw her phone out the car window rather than hand it over to him. Rhaimeh then made her go fetch the phone, at which point she approached a couple parked in a car nearby and asked for help. The couple let her sit in their car while she waited for Rhaimeh to drive off.
Once he'd departed, the woman said she was able to go back to her own car. As she was driving away, she said Rhaimeh reappeared in his car and blocked her path.
The woman said she threw her phone into Rhaimeh's car and 'told him to do whatever he wanted to the phone,' the detective wrote in the probable cause statement. When Rhaimeh told her to 'just leave,' the woman retrieved her phone and drove around his car.
Rhaimeh then allegedly chased her around the parking lot as she unsuccessfully attempted to shake him. At one point, he pulled up to her car and then shot her twice through her car door.
The woman said that she realized that she had been shot in the leg, so she pulled her car over, got out, climbed over a fence, went to a bar and asked a couple sitting at a table for help.
Police arrived on the scene at 1.44am.
Rhaimeh told police that he had been with the woman that night, but said that he did not argue or shoot her, The Kansas City Star reported.
The woman was said to have sustained non-life threatening gunshot wounds to both of her legs and taken to a local hospital.
Rhaimeh was arrested at his home, KSHB reported.
Prosecutors have asked for a $50,000 bond for Rhaimeh.
