A man charged over the stabbing of another man during an argument in Sydney's south suffers from schizophrenia and will remain behind bars.

Moses Golf is accused of stabbing a 43-year-old man multiple times in the buttocks and chest during an argument on the Princes Highway at Rockdale about 11pm on Friday.

The 28-year-old and another alleged attacker, both of whom are known to the victim, were arrested at the scene.

Paramedics treated the 43-year-old before taking him to St George Hospital in a stable condition.

Golf, who has been charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, wore prison clothes and had a heavily bandaged left hand when he appeared via audio visual link at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.

Magistrate Mark Shepherd ordered Golf to receive ongoing treatment for his mental health condition.

'I need a family member as a representative,' Golf told the court.

'The only representative that I really have and really know is my father.'

The Kirrawee man asked his lawyer to contact his dad to request he join him in court, urging him to be called daily as he is 'really forgetful'.

Golf did not apply for bail and it was formally refused, and he will remain in custody until he next appears via AVL at Central Local Court on Thursday.

A 53-year-old man was also charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of others and was granted conditional bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court on Wednesday.
