West Highland terriers are generally quick to learn - but this little fellow clearly needs more practice in the licking department.

An adorable video shows the Westie trying to lick its owner's nail-varnished hand and failing miserably.

The one-year-old male puppy, from Omaha, Nebraska, appears to have briefly mastered the action.

However, it then launches into a flicking, rather than licking, motion with the tip of its tongue flapping on the underside of the woman's hand.

The dog's ability to lick is made more difficult given that it has its mouth around the owner's hand.

With the strains of The Gospel Truth from the Disney movie Hercules playing in the background, it almost looks like the pup is harbouring a nascent musical talent - trying to beat out the song's rhythm with its tongue.

One of the reasons dogs lick their owners is because they like the taste of the salty skin.

Licking also releases endorphins which give the animal a feeling of pleasure and comfort.

It can also be a sign of submission, to reinforce the notion that its owner is the dominant member of the pack.
