The 'Son of Sam' serial killer who terrorized New York City 40 years ago, is recovering from a second heart surgery.
The 64-year-old serial killer David Berkowitz was taken to the hospital on January 21 to treat complications from an emergency heart surgery, the New York Post reported.
The serial killer was transferred to a hospital from the Shawagunk maximum-security prison last December where he is serving a life sentence. He returned to the prison on January 15, but was then readmitted to the hospital, according to his lawyer Mark Heller.
The procedure treated clotting and improved circulation to his legs.

The lawyer said that Berkowitz is not gravely ill or close to death.
Heller did say the notorious serial killer has gained weight since the first surgery.
'David was optimistic. He said God was watching over him. He's a very spiritual person,' said Heller.
The New York Post reported that Berkowitz was taken to an Albany hospital on Monday for emergency heart surgery. Berkowitz is pictured above in 1977
Berkowitz set the city on edge with late-night shootings in Brooklyn and Queens that killed six people and wounded seven.
Berkowitz started his rampage in the summer of 1976, and the killings continued for a year.
He primarily targeted young women with long brown hair or couples sitting in cars.
Berkowitz left behind letters at the scenes of some of his shootings. In two of them, he referred to himself as the 'Son of Sam'

Berkowitz referred to himself as the 'Son of Sam' in taunting letters left behind at the scene of two of the shootings.
He later said that the name was a reference to his neighbor Sam, who he believed to be a demon. He said it was Sam's dog that had been ordering him to kill.
He was finally arrested on August 10, 1977, and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for each of the six murders. He is next up for parole in May.
Since entering prison, Berkowitz became an evangelical Christian, and now calls himself the 'Son of Hope'.
In an interview with CBS News in August, Berkowitz said he is 'very sorry for what happened'.
He said the shootings were 'a break from reality, thought I was doing something to appease the devil. I'm sorry for it.'
