Fifteen firefighters were called to rescue a hapless cow and its calf after they got stuck in a canal.

Dramatic pictures show the animals up to their waists after they stumbled into the water in Leek, Staffordshire.

Three fire crews were called to the scene at 10.27am on Friday after a concerned passerby raised the alarm.

Firefighters used specialist animal safety equipment and a giant harness attached to a heavy-lifting loader to winch the cows out of the water.

Footage of the rescue shows one of the cows munching on a patch of grass close to the spot where it fell.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: 'A call was received at 10.27am

'Three crews, from Longton, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Leek all attended the incident.

'The cows and their owner were found at the scene, and the animals were stuck in the water.

'The calf was released from the water after officers at the scene used specialist animal rescue equipment, followed by the cow.'
