Tory MP caught out gawping at showgirls on his phone in the House of Commons says he was just 'looking at my Twitter feed'

  • Ms Soubry sent a picture from inside the chamber on MPs' first day back at work
  • She wrote: 'Everyone thinks they're a winner... we are all losers except the DUP'
  • But Twitter users were more interested in a fellow MP on his phone in front of her
  • Users started zooming in, asking what MP Jonathan Djanogly was so fixated on
  • He has now told MailOnline the image - taken in 1958 in New York - appeared on his Twitter feed

The Tory MP who was caught looking at showgirls on his phone in the Commons says he was simply scrolling through his Twitter feed when the image appeared.

Jonathan Djanogly was unwittingly captured looking at a photograph of three scantily-clad women when his colleague Anna Soubry posted a picture from inside the chamber.

After she tweeted the image, Twitter went into overdrive as observers tried to work out what Mr Djanogly was looking at so intently on his phone.

Now Mr Djanogly, the MP for Huntingdon, says he came across the image - believed to be a famous photograph of showgirls from inside a New York nightclub - while flicking through Twitter before proceedings began.

Around the same time, History Lovers Club, an account which Mr Djanogly follows on Twitter, tweeted the photograph, which was taken by Gordon Banks in 1958.

The MP told MailOnline: 'I was looking at my Twitter feed whilst sitting in the Chamber but not during proceedings of the House.'

He added: 'I don’t have any recollection of any particular picture and I certainly don’t follow any tweets that I would call embarrassing.'

Ms Soubry had posted the photograph from inside the chamber on MPs' first day back to work.

She captioned the photograph: 'Is this the first Parliament where everyone thinks they're a winner when in fact we are all losers except the DUP?'

But observers on Twitter seemed more preoccupied with what Mr Djanogly, who was sat in front of Ms Soubry, was looking at.

Users started zooming in on the photograph and discussing whether Mr Djanogly, who has represented the constituency since 2001, had something rude on his phone.

Ms Soubry later deleted the tweet, telling The Sun: 'I took a photo and tweeted it out, on what is quite a historic day.

'I had no idea anyone was looking at anything on their phone in front of me.'

The photograph, entitled Showgirls Playing Chess, features three women sat together backstage at the club.
