What sort of TV weather expert can’t tell the seasons apart?
Step forward the man voted the UK’s favourite forecaster, Tomasz Schafernaker, who got himself into a muddle yesterday live on air.
With an image of a cloudless blue sky behind him, the 38-year-old told viewers of the News at One: ‘Today, the 1st of June, marks the first day of meteorological winter – we start a bit earlier here.’
For the remainder of the forecast, he seemed unaware that he had robbed the nation of both summer and autumn. But his error clearly dawned on him soon after.
With an image of a cloudless blue sky behind him, the 38-year-old told viewers: ‘Today, the 1st of June, marks the first day of meteorological winter – we start a bit earlier here'
Next to a jokey video clip of someone banging their head repeatedly against a desk, he tweeted: ‘Noooo... How COULD I have confuse the seasons. I meant #SUMMER #MeteorologicalSummer!! ...sorry.’
Despite a legion of fans, he is famous for his gaffes, having described parts of Scotland as ‘Nowheresville’, been sick while reading the shipping forecast and been caught on TV making an obscene gesture to a fellow host.
However, he may not have been entirely wrong about the season, given a miserable short-term forecast, with the start of summer likely to be met with downpours and electrical storms today.
The Met Office has issued a weather warning for the South East this afternoon and evening because of the threat of torrential rain.
It warned of flooding, lightning and even hail, thanks to humid air coming up from France.
The worst-hit areas could see up to 3cm of rain in an hour, and driving conditions are expected to be hazardous.
The South East will see the highest temperatures, with peaks of 28C (82F) possible, although the weather will become cooler tomorrow.
