Sensible skirts, discreet jewellery and comfortable heels.

In fashion terms at least, Sarah Brown has always been a dyed-in-the-wool conservative.

Until yesterday. The woman at Gordon Brown’s side as he stepped out in Downing Street

looked sharper, younger and a little more daring than the old Sarah.

Despite the bitter cold, Mrs Brown, 45, chose a rather short skirt, which showed off a little

more leg than usual.

Sheer black tights, a nipped-in jacket and snappy pair of stilettos finished her look.

Then the woman who doesn’t usually bother with a necklace showed off a bold pearl and copper piece in line with the current trend for chunky jewellery.

Her make-up was immaculate and she showed off a shorter, choppy hairstyle.

Her usual look is a little safer to say the least. Her wardrobe must be crammed with long skirts, classic suits and flesh-coloured tights.

Perhaps these will be relegated to the bottom drawer for now as Mrs Brown, the mother of John,

three and Fraser, eight months, explores a new world of fashion.

"Sarah Brown had clearly made a bit more effort than usual," one onlooker said yesterday.

"She was striding out and looking more confident. Maybe she is gearing up for the role of prime minister’s wife.

"Whatever the case it’s one of the shortest skirts she’s ever appeared in."
