  • Sarah Lane nearly died after tripping over dogs and landing on kitchen knife
  • Her daughter Freya, 12, raised the alarm after hearing her mother collapse
  • Ms Lane was rushed to hospital and her heart even stopped at one point
  • But she is now recovering well and she praised her daughter's actions

A mother-of-three almost died when she stabbed herself in the chest after tripping over her two dogs.

Sarah Lane's heart stopped when she tumbled over her pets and onto a chef's kitchen knife standing upright on the drainer of her Birmingham home.

The 32-year-old was rushed to hospital after she collapsed in a pool of blood at around 2.30am last Saturday, April 15.

Her life was saved by paramedics and staff at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital when her quick-thinking daughter alerted her mother's boyfriend, who called the emergency services.

Ms Lane said she tripped over her two dogs, Tie, a Staffie, and husky Kiara, in her kitchen as she sterilised baby bottles for her two young sons.

'I was going backwards and forwards sterilising ten or 12 bottles and I tripped over the dog,' she said.

'I fell on to the draining board and on top of the knife, which was standing up.

'I didn't feel anything at all at first and then a minute later I collapsed.

'Apparently my body shut down and paramedics were pumping my chest. I was losing blood.

'I don't remember much but I recall lots of people around me and a doctor in the ambulance who shoved his hand in my chest.'

Ms Lane, a chef, had earlier returned from visiting friends with her daughter Freya, 12.

The schoolgirl alerted Sarah's boyfriend, Peter Hartnett, and sister, Stella, when she raced downstairs after hearing a thud as her mother collapsed.

Ms Lane's heart stopped at one point but she insisted on being discharged from hospital over the Easter weekend to return to her family, including sons Lincoln, 23 months, and eight-month-old Theo.

And she hailed Freya's coolness during the unfolding emergency.

Ms Lane added: 'She has been so brave. I don't know what I would do without her.

'She helps me so much with the boys but she's often out on her bike or doing her Thai kick boxing as well.

'If it wasn't for my daughter I wouldn't be here today. My partner was amazing, as was my sister and I cannot thank the QE staff enough.'
