How to be a lifesaver: After MP Tobias Ellwood tried to save hero policeman Keith Palmer, our essential guide to helping treat the wounded
THINK OF YOURSELF
The very first thing you should do is make sure you're not putting yourself in danger, says Emma Hammett, a former A&E nurse and founder of First Aid for Life. Call 999 as soon as it is safe. Only once you are sure you are safe from any potential further attack should you tend to the injured.
START WITH THE QUIET ONES
'Victims who are making a lot of noise clearly have their airways open. It is the quiet ones who may be slowly slipping away, and whom you should look after first,' says Emma.

LOOK FOR CHILDREN
Small children have less blood volume and can bleed to death more quickly than adults, so you may need to tend to them quickly. They also have smaller lung capacity, making damage to the lungs more deadly.
SOOTHE AND REASSURE
'This is a very important part of first aid,' explains Joe Mulligan of the British Red Cross. 'Reassurance has been shown to improve a person's chances.
'Let them know help is coming, that you will stay with them and that it will be all right. Trust yourself and don't be afraid to show compassion.'
TAKE CARE WITH HEAD INJURIES
First, check that the patient is breathing. If not, ensure that the airway is open and start CPR (see panel far right).
If they are breathing, remember that head injuries which appear relatively minor can rapidly worsen. 'Someone might be conscious to start with and rapidly lose consciousness,' explains Alan Weir, clinical director of St John Ambulance. 'If they appear dazed and confused, they could be suffering from a brain injury. Get them to sit down and stay calm until help arrives.
'Don't be put off if someone becomes aggressive after a head injury, since this can be a symptom of bleeding on the brain.'
