Bleak pictures have offered a glimpse inside the desolate remains of an elementary school that has been abandoned for more than thirty years.

The haunting images show what is left of the red-brick building as ceilings have caved in and rubble is strewn across the classroom floors. Other eerie pictures show a range of children characters hand-drawn around the school's walls leading to the auditorium.

The striking photographs were taken in Zebulon elementary school in Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia by an urban explorer who goes by the name of Abandoned Southeast.

'This is a small town six-room Elementary school dating back to the 1920s,' he said.

'There is an ongoing effort by the Town of Zebulon to save this old school. They are working to raise the funding necessary to preserve the building for future generations.

'However, due to decades of neglect and suffering tornado damage in 2011, time is running out on saving this historic structure.'

Zebulon elementary school opened on September 13, 1926 and closed thirty-five years later in June, 1961.

The deserted school building was discovered by the photographer, who took the eerie images with the permission of the town council.

The Neoclassical building was later sold to local development authority, Zebulon Downtown Development Authority, for a mere $1.

The school was then used as a storage and maintenance space for the local county until 2009, but the run-down school building has otherwise not been used in thirty years.
