More than 50 police officers have been investigating the uncharacteristic disappearance of the young man but authorities fear that he may be held captive or dead.

The unsuccessful search through the North Pine River comes only a day after the family of the missing 22-year-old, made a tearful plea to the media, begging the public for any information on his whereabouts.

Holding back tears Mr Thompson's father said:  'Sam... If you can hear this, please call us or one of your friends,' the Brisbane Times reports.

Footage released of Mr Johnson the day he went missing, shows him leaving his apartment alone, and his distinctive Ford Mustang leaving the car park at around 9.30am.

The vehicle was then spotted in the Deep Water Bend Reserve Car Park on Tuesday at 1pm before it was found abandoned and unlocked in Wooyung in northern NSW, at around 7.30pm.

Police are also interested in speaking to the driver of white Chrysler 300, that was captured driving closely behind Mr Thompson's Mustang at the time of his disappearance.

Police are urging the driver of the Chrysler or anyone who may have seen the car in Bald Hills on Tuesday March 7 to contact them immediately.

'The circumstances of Sam's disappearance are quite concerning in that he's just vanished off the face of the earth,' Detective Tim Trezise said on Monday.

Mr Thompson's dog was also found unattended at his home in Albion, a Brisbane suburb on Thursday.

It had been abandoned in the apartment for two days - something that added to investigators' 'suspicion,' the police spokesperson said.
