A mother-of-two was stunned to find what she believed to be a squashed centipede in her sun dried tomato sandwich.
Vegan Sam Beneff, 28, was about to take a bite of her flat bread with the sun dried tomatoes when she noticed the strange patterns in the fruit.
She was horrified when she made out the shape of a dead centipede, with antennae, in the tomato, from a 99p jar from Aldi.
Sam Beneff was about to tuck into a flatbread sandwich with sun dried tomatoes when she spotted the odd shape
But the supermarket chain said the strange shape was mould or the skin.
She said: 'I was about to take a bite and then I spotted this long brown pattern in the tomato.
'It was only when I looked more closely that I realised it was a centipede complete with antennae. It was horrible.
'I was gagging - it was absolutely disgusting and put me right off my tea. I love sun dried tomatoes and eat lots of them because I am a vegan but now I wonder if I will ever eat them again.
The tomato was one from a 99p jar from Aldi, and the supermarket said it was probably just a mark from the fruit's skin or possibly mould
Sam, of Oxford, said: 'Aldi asked me to return the jar and inspected it and believed it was 'mould' and not a dead creepy crawly. But it certainly looked like one to me. They have offered me a £5 gift voucher.'
A spokesperson for Aldi Customer Services said: 'We treat every complaint very seriously and apologise for any concern caused.
Sam thought she'd spotted a squashed centipede and said the discovery put her 'right off her tea' and possibly off sun dried tomatoes forever
'The supplier operates various forms of foreign body detection units on site and there have been no other complaints of this nature.
'Having reviewed the photos the object seems to be that of 'mould' or a natural part of the skin.'
