A pensioner has been arrested on suspicion of sending abusive social media messages to two MPs.

The 73-year-old was taken into custody in West Sussex, at around 8.50am today following claims by the alleged victims on July 13 and July 20 last year, say Scotland Yard.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said an inquiry was launched by the Met's Counter Terrorism Command along with the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command.

A spokesman said: 'These are not being treated as terrorist incidents.'

The suspect is being held at a West Sussex police station.
