Police are being mocked after releasing 'useless' CCTV stills of a man they want to speak to that are so blurred they are completely indecipherable.

Detectives in Glasgow posted the bizarre set of images on Facebook following an incident at the city's Central Station involving a 43-year-old woman.

They believe the man pictured may have information that can help them with their investigation.

After seeing the low-resolution images one internet commenter said: 'We have clearer pics of the surface of Mars'

But the stills are so low-resolution that it is almost impossible to work out who is shown - despite the surrounding area being covered by dozens of CCTV cameras.

Internet commenters were quick to mock the pictures, with one saying: 'I wouldn't recognize MYSELF in that quality of picture. We have clearer pics of the surface of Mars.'

Amanda Dickson wrote on Facebook: 'There's nothing to see in these photos !? Who decides the technology for these "security" camera's they're a joke.'

Another commenter added: 'After installing hundreds of new cameras in Central station a few years back, this is the best images they could get? Did they buy the cameras off eBay or something?'

One Reddit user questioned 'what the f**k is the bottom right supposed to be? with another person replying: 'Three people at the bottom of an escalator.'

He was wearing dark jogging bottoms, a zipper top which is dark at the bottom, grey at the top with grey sleeves and dark trainers. The man was also carrying a blue carrier bag. 

But a Police Scotland spokesman defended the fuzzy pictures and told MailOnline they were they 'best images' available to detectives.

They added: 'I know the first one, he's got a distinct jacket on and the way he's kind of standing with the blue bag and stuff. 

'Potentially someone could have seen that so a decision will have been made to put these out.'

Officers refused to give further details of the incident but said it happened between 8pm and 8.35pm on Thursday February 2nd in a lane near Central Station on Glasgow's Gordon Street.

Anyone who can identify the man is asked to call 101 or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
