Body of a man is pulled from the River Thames in front of horrified tourists outside the London Eye

Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was pulled from the River Thames just yards from the London Eye.

The Met's marine policing unit were called to Waterloo Millennium pier, beneath the iconic tourist attraction on London's Southbank, yesterday morning after reports a body had been found.

Coastguard and the Tower RNLI rescuers were also called to the scene where the body was recovered

Police, who arrived at the scene just before midday, said a man's body had been recovered and that his death is being treated as 'unexplained'.

The age of the man is unclear.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: 'The Marine Policing Unit were called to Waterloo Millennium pier at 11:41hrs on Tuesday, 7 February following reports of a body found.

'The body of a man was recovered from the River Thames. Police are in the process of identifying the deceased man. Age unclear at present.

'At this early stage, the death is being treated as unexplained. A post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course. Enquiries continue.'
