The heat will be even worse in the city's far western suburbs, with Penrith and Richmond set for 41 degree temperatures on Tuesday. 

Those high temperatures will likely be accompanied by rain and thunder storms in the evening, according to a Bureau of Meteorology forecast. 

Sydney is likely to cool off by Thursday, when Australia Day revellers are set to flock to the city's beaches.
