IPCC to probe train death man

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the death of a man who was hit by a train shortly after being released from custody, it said today.
Phillip Edmondson, 30, from Wellington, Somerset, was killed less than two hours after being released from a police cell.
He had been detained under the Mental Health Act by Avon and Somerset Police on September 29, but following an assessment by mental health professionals he was released at around 1pm the following day.
At 2.45pm his body was discovered on the track at Obridge, Taunton.
The case was referred to the IPCC because Mr Edmondson's death occurred shortly after his release.
IPCC Commissioner Rebecca Marsh said: "This was a tragic death and my sympathies go to Mr Edmondson's family and friends.
"The IPCC investigation will identify any lessons to be learned and will establish the facts.
"When the police are involved in mental health cases they have to rely on the views of health professionals, and in this case the evidence indicates that they were advised to release Mr Edmondson."
