Two adults and a child on a school trip were seriously injured when their coach flipped on to its side on a motorway today, police said.
The 34-seater coach from the Barrow area of Cumbria was travelling south along the M6 motorway when the accident happened at about 10.30am.
Two adults, one of whom is a 72-year-old man, and a child suffered serious injuries to their arms.
The injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
The accident happened between junctions 34 and 33 of the southbound carriageway of the M6 near Lancaster.
Police do not believe another vehicle was involved in the incident.
A Lancashire Constabulary spokeswoman said: "The coach flipped on to one side and then skidded along the carriageway.
"We do not yet know what caused this.
"Two adults and one child suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.
"Several other children suffered minor injuries and are being taken to the Royal Preston Hospital for a check-up."
Paramedics and an air ambulance attended the scene.
The southbound carriageway of the motorway was closed between junctions 34 and 33 while emergency crews helped the injured.
A Cumbria County Council spokesman confirmed the pupils attended Walney School on Sandygap Lane, Walney, south of Barrow-in-Furness.
The mixed school has 681 pupils.
The youngsters were on a day trip to Southport when the accident happened.
A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue said 20 children were on board the coach when it overturned, and all had been evacuated by the time emergency crews arrived.
A Cumbria Ambulance Service spokeswoman said one of the adult casualties was a 72-year-old man.
She said: "He suffered suspected rib injuries which are thought to be non-serious. He was transferred by air ambulance to the Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.
"Many of the children have now been taken by non-emergency ambulance to either the Royal Preston Hospital or the Royal Lancashire Infirmary for check-ups."
