'Worst drought for 100 years' warning

Some parts of the south east are facing the worst drought for 100 years, the Government confirmed today.
Environment Minister Elliot Morley told the Commons: "We are facing a two-year drought.
"We are facing the worst drought since 1975. In some parts of the south east, it is the worst drought for 100 years."
Faced with Opposition concerns about the effects of water shortages, Mr Morley defended the introduction of hosepipe bans by water companies.
"I don't think it is a lot to ask that people should face some restrictions ... ," he said. "They can still use watering cans, for example. They can still use recycled water."
His comments came as Tory Richard Ottaway (Croydon S) warned of further likely "drastic" action to curtail water demand.
Mr Ottaway said "essential use only" orders were about to be imposed in some areas.
"They will result not only in a ban on car washes but a ban on the watering of bowling greens, golf courses, tennis courts and sports grounds such as Lords, the Oval and Wimbledon and watering of the Royal Parks, including Kew Gardens.
"This has arisen because this is the second dry winter in a row. What are your contingency plans in the event of a third dry winter - because if you wait until then it will be far too late." he said.
Mr Morley said: "You're right. This drought started in November 2004."
He said it was important to "prudently manage" water supplies. "That includes, if necessary, taking drought orders."
