SEX
Downside School, Somerset: The monks who teach here say pupils should 'relate in a happy and mature way with the opposite sex'.
Giggleswick School, North Yorkshire: Boys and girls can visit each other's houses. Behaviour between sexes 'should not cause embarrassment to anyone'.
Cademuir International School, Dumfriesshire: No six-inch rule because many pupils are from the Continent, where 'hand-holding is the norm'.
Brockwood Park School, Hampshire:
Students must 'abstain from sexual intercourse or inappropriate sexual activity'.
Bradfield College, Berkshire: Expulsion for sex, but offenders allowed to 'jump before they are pushed' to avoid a black mark on their record.
DRINKING AND SMOKING
Milton Abbey School, Dorset: 'A beer or two allowed on Saturday nights.' The school says: 'If we made smoking compulsory and Latin illegal, then all the boys would sneak off to the woods to read Virgil and throw the cigarettes in the fire.'
Eton College, Berkshire: Drunken boys are usually sobered up in their house and smoking is 'fairly prevalent'. Dismissals for repeat offences.
Malvern Girls' College, Worcestershire:
Smoking allowed off the school premises by over-16s, wine with a meal for over-18s.
Queenswood School, Hertfordshire:
Fines and community service for smoking and drinking, increased for a second offence, suspension for a third.
Gresham's School, Norfolk: Points scale for offences. Suspension or expulsion when a certain points tally is reached.
