Silence to remember shot WPC

The people of Bradford have remembered Pc Sharon Beshenivsky, who was gunned down in the city a week ago.

The city centre fell silent for two minutes to coincide with the time the 38-year-old mother-of-three was murdered and her colleague Pc Teresa Milburn was seriously injured at about 3.30pm last Friday.

The event planned for Centenary Square was preceded by a short service.

It was attended by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Valerie Binney, and led by the Bishop of Bradford, the Right Reverend David James.

But Pc Beshenivsky's immediate family were not at the service, nor was Pc Milburn, who is recovering from her injuries at home.

The two rookie officers were shot as they were responding to an alarm at a travel agency which had been activated by a member of staff during a robbery.

Witnesses said they were shot as the three men ran out of the building and had no chance to call for back up.

Pc Beshenivsky, who lived in the Keighley area, died on her youngest daughter's fourth birthday.

Since her death, Bradford has witnessed an outpouring of emotion symbolised by the mountain of floral tributes close to the spot where she fell.

Beshenivsky's death have now been released on bail pending further inquiries.

An 18-year-old woman who was also arrested has been released without charge.
