Amazon is set to give its workers TREEHOUSES in the office as it builds futuristic new 'biodomes' at Seattle headquarters

  • Amazon said the treehouses will be linked by suspension bridges inside three transparent, conjoined spheres
  • The spheres will double as a high-tech greenhouse, containing more than 3,000 species of plants and up to 50 trees
  • Employees will be able to hold meetings in the tree canopy or discuss ideas in rooms with walls made from vines

Foosball tables, DJ booths and beanbag chairs are so yesterday - online giant Amazon is planning to build treehouses for employees at its headquarters.

Linked by suspension bridges, the treehouses will act as unconventional meeting spaces inside three conjoined spheres that are currently under construction in downtown Seattle.

In addition to an office, the transparent spheres will double as a state-of-the-art greenhouse, containing more than 3,000 species of plants and up to 50 trees, where workers can connect with nature.

Tech giants are constantly one-upping each other with unconventional work spaces - from areas filled with arcade games or musical instruments to swimming pools or rooms with fireplaces - but Amazon is turning a new leaf with its concept, which was designed by Seattle firm NBBJ.

Employees will be able to hold meetings in the tree canopy, discuss ideas in rooms with walls made from vines or relax next to an indoor creek, the New York Times reported.

With the spheres under construction, the company is growing trees and exotic plants - many of them endangered - at a rural greenhouse 30 minutes from its headquarters.

Amazon is hoping the unusual setting will translate into a comfortable working environment that motivates employees and inspires creative ideas - and it may one day open to public tours.

Seattle's largest private employer plans to open the extraordinary workplace, surrounded by a cluster of office buildings, in 2018, as it looks to leave its mark on the city's skyline with a $4billion investment into its headquarters.

'We wanted it to be iconic, a structure that would be similar to another icon in the city, like the Space Needle, for newcomers to Seattle,' John Schoettler, Amazon's director of global real estate and facilities, told the New York Times. 'It would be a found treasure in the downtown neighborhood.'

The greenhouse complex will act as a refuge for employees who work in Seattle's concrete jungle.

The indoor temperature and humidity will be optimized - 73F and 60 per cent humidity during the day and 55F and 85 per cent humidity at night - to make it comfortable for employees, computer equipment and plants, said Amazon horticulturalist Ron Gagliardo.

Amazon's plans for the greenhouse are unprecedented, and they raise the stakes when it comes to unconventional spaces or perks.

Google's headquarters in California's Silicon Valley, for example, has swimming pools with lifeguards and an outdoor volleyball court, while Facebook's base has fully-stocked bars, exercise equipment and a basketball court.
