Anti-nuclear demo at sub base
Sixteen people were arrested today during an anti-nuclear demonstration at the Faslane Naval Base in Scotland, the Ministry of Defence said.
Around 100 demonstrators took part in the action at the Clyde base, which lasted for three hours.
An MoD spokewoman confirmed its police had arrested 13 people - 11 women and two men - while the Strathclyde force arrested two men and a woman.
She said they would be charged in connection with breach of the peace and malicious damage offences.
The day of direct action was organised by campaign group Trident Ploughshares over a High Court judgment which ruled that Britain's nuclear deterrent was not illegal.
A spokesman said: 'We were delighted that so many people came down to Faslane at short notice. People know the judges had a chance to do the right thing and blew it. It's up to all of us now to step up the campaign.'
Three High Court judges ruled last week in the Court of Session in Edinburgh that nuclear weapons were not illegal.
Anti-nuclear campaign and Scottish Socialist MSP Tommy Sheridan addressed today's protest.
