A man shot himself dead on a motorway today following a chase involving armed officers, police said.
Officers fired a baton round at the man, who had a firearm, after stopping a car on the M1 near Nottingham.
The man then turned the firearm on himself, South Yorkshire Police said.
A police spokeswoman said officers administered first aid at the scene, between junction 27, at Annesley, and junction 26, at Nuthall, but the man died en route to the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham.
Officers stopped the vehicle after pursuing it southbound on the M1 after the driver left an address in Doncaster and drove off at speed.
Police were making enquiries at the address shortly after midnight today, after receiving information from another force.
