A man was detained today at London's Luton Airport under the Terrorism Act, Bedfordshire Police said.
He was due to fly on Ryanair to Nimes in France when he was stopped by police.
The aircraft was initially delayed but after being checked by police was allowed to continue with its journey.
Deputy Chief Constable Martin Stuart said: "I would like to reassure everybody that their safety is our priority and apologise for the delay to this flight, but it is important that all calls to the police are thoroughly investigated.
"Again, we apologise for the inconvenience this has caused."
A spokesman for Luton Airport confirmed there had been a security alert but refused to give any further details.
He said the alert had not affected operations within the airport
"Planes are still arriving and departing as normal and no one has been evacuated," the spokesman said.
"The runway is in full use."
