Burglars killed a pet cat by putting it in the washing machine and switching it on, police said today.
The incident happened after offenders forced their way into a house in Sewell Highway, Wyken, Coventry, between 8pm on Saturday and 1am on Sunday.
A pet hamster was also let out of its cage before the burglars left, apparently empty-handed.
Detective Sergeant Steve Francis, of West Midlands Police, said: "We are investigating the break-in and asking for anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area to contact us.
"The family are very distressed at the horrific way in which the cat died."
Anyone with information is being asked to call police on 0845 113 5000.
