…are you reading now?
I literally do not have a minute in my day to read. Then I discovered audiobooks and they have changed my life. I am now listening to Elizabeth Gaskell’s Wives And Daughters. I recently discovered we have a connection and I have felt inspired to read her books as a result.
…would you take to a desert island?
I adore Shakespeare, and so it would have to be the complete works. He makes you laugh and makes you cry — what more could you need?
…first gave you the reading bug?
Enid Blyton and the Famous Five. I was obsessed. I used to sit in our only chair, which was threadbare and barely serviceable, with my fingers in my ears, reading her books. She took me from my concrete council estate to a world of adventure, cooked hams, freshly buttered bread and Timmy the dog. I remember my father, who was a bus driver, bringing me home Five Go To Smuggler’s Top and being so excited I couldn’t thank him. I just burst into tears.
Ruby Flynn by Nadine Dorries is published by Head of Zeus at £16.99.
