Icy temperatures hung over Britain today as snow, sleet and hail caused treacherous driving conditions on the nation's roads. Drivers were advised to check conditions before setting out
Those living in the South East are expected to suffer the coldest weather today, forecasters warned. Snow fell at Stansted Airport in Essex at 1am today.
Wintry showers descended on eastern Scotland, South East England, the North York Moors, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk yesterday as temperatures plunged to a low of 1.8C (36F).
Yesterday's lowest temperature was recorded in Leek Thorncliffe, near Stoke-on-Trent, while Wattisham in Suffolk had snowfall of 1cm.
Weather forecaster predict that most of today's showers will be confined to south-east Kent. The rest of the UK will be mainly cloudy with some patchy rain and drizzle in the north of England.
A Highways Agency spokeswoman said road gritters would continue to be out in force until the cold snap had abated.
She advised motorists to check conditions before setting out and keep their distance from other vehicles.
