US Rice warns over Russian democracy
Last updated at 14:05 18 January 2005
US Secretary of State-designate Condoleezza Rice said today that preserving Russia's democracy is vital to US-Russian relations amid worries the Kremlin is turning increasingly authoritarian.
"In Russia, we see that the path to democracy is uneven and that its success is not yet assured," Russian-speaking Rice said in her prepared statement to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, saying the two nations can cooperate on common problems.
"As we do so, we will continue to press the case for democracy, and we will continue to make clear that the protection of democracy in Russia is vital to the future of US-Russia relations."
