A record 2.2 billion cards, letters and packets have been delivered this Christmas, 100 million more than expected, new figures showed today.
Average daily mail volumes have risen from 83
million to 120 million, with peaks of 140 million in the past few days.
The Christmas postbag has been boosted by an estimated 55 million items bought online as shoppers have spent £4 billion gifts ordered over the internet.
The Royal Mail today paid tribute to its staff for handling the huge numbers of cards and other post in the four weeks to Christmas Eve.
"This has been one of the best years for us collecting, sorting and delivering the Christmas mail, and this is down to the hard work of our postmen and women," said Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier.
