Tube chaos as workers plan New Year strike
Last updated at 14:31 23 December 2004
Signal workers on London Underground are to strike on New Year's Eve and January 4 in a row over jobs and hours, the RMT announced today.
London Underground services face total shutdown after hundreds of signal workers voted for industrial action in a long-running row over pay, jobs and conditions.
Members of the Rail Maritime and Transport Union supported walkouts by 93 per cent and will now stage 24-hour strikes on New Year's Eve and again on January 4 unless the dispute is resolved.
The union set a deadline of 3pm today for finding a breakthrough to the row, otherwise the two strikes will go ahead, causing travel chaos for New Year revellers and millions of workers returning after the festive break.
Services on the Piccadilly line are also being disrupted on Christmas Eve due to industrial action by drivers.
