Army shake-up at-a-glance

The wide-ranging shake-up of the Army - to create a series of 'super' regiments - includes the following...

  • The Army will be reduced from 40 infantry battalions to 36.

  • The King's Own Royal Border Regiment, the King's Regiment and the Queen's Lancashire Regiment will amalgamate to form two new battalions within the new King's Lancashire and Border Regiment.

  • The Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment will merge with the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment.

  • Components of the Royal Gloucester Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment will merge with, in the case of the Gloucesters, the Devonshire and Dorsetshire Regiments which will then merge with the Light Infantry.

  • The 1st Battalion The Parachute Regiment will be removed from the infantry structure to become part of a new tri-service Ranger unit to support Special Forces.

  • The Royal Scots and the King's Own Scottish Borderers will merge and the four other battalions including the Black Watch will become The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

  • One battalion will also be taken from the Prince of Wales's Divison in the south of England.

  • The 4th Armoured Brigade based in Germany will be converted to a Mechanised Brigade in 2006.

  • The 19th Mechanised Brigade, based in Catterick will start conversion to a light brigade in January.
