A jail inmate in Arizona is in hospital after authorities say he pulled one of his eyeballs out of its socket with his fingers.
Sheriff's officials in Pinal County, just southeast of Phoenix, say Colin Corkhill, of Scottsdale, was booked into jail on Wednesday on suspicion of attempted murder, auto theft, aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
The 26-year-old was originally housed in a cell with other inmates at Pinal County Jail, but detention officers saw him punch himself in the face, so he was moved to a cell by himself and placed under a mental health watch.

Officials say detention officers making routine cell checks on Thursday night saw blood on the window of Corkhill's cell door.
Sheriff Paul Babeu said they then observed Corkhill 'laying on the floor of his cell with his right eyeball detached from the socket'.
Corkhill was taken by ground ambulance to the Florence Fire Department, then flown by air ambulance to a hospital.

Doctors were not able to save his eye.
Since there were no weapons or instruments in his cell, medical staff determined Corkhill had pulled his eyeball out with his fingers.
When he is released from the hospital, he will be booked back into Pinal County Jail.
