How YOU can help the suffering farmers
The Daily Mail and femail.co.uk's Farm Aid appeal broke through the £3million mark last night.
Our generous readers have sent cheques totalling well over £1million, with another £196,000 donated over the phone.
Another £1million was given by the Royal Bank of Scotland, together with £500,000 from Guernsey businessman Derek Coates and £230,000 from the Mail on Sunday.
The first £2million will be handed over to six farming charities this week.
The lion's share will go to three which award grants to cover farmers' essential bills - the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution, the Royal Scottish Agricultural Benevolent Institution and the ARC-Addington Fund.
RABI spokesman Nicholas Bond said yesterday: 'This is great news. The need for money to help farmers in distress is growing every day and this will help us to meet that need.'
Other charities benefiting from the appeal are the Farm Crisis Network, the Rural Stress Information Network and the Samaritans.
