Travellers fed up with beach holidays
Travellers are getting browned off with beach holidays and would rather opt for local cuisine than chips, a new survey said.
Three in five holidaymakers think the big tour operators "just pump out superficial holidays", the survey from the responsibletravel.com company found.
As many as 88% think the big holiday companies have a responsibility for preserving the local environment and culture.
The survey also identified a breed of "new" travellers keen to take independent or tailor-made holidays and who are also anxious to immerse themselves in local cultures.
Based on responses from 1,002 adults, the survey found:
:: 60% think big tour companies just pump out superficial holidays and it is time they changed;
:: 57% say too many holidays just offer chips and Sky football in the sun;
:: 60% have had enough of crowded beaches on resort type holidays;
:: 88% say tour operators should have a responsibility for preserving the local environment and culture, and benefiting local people;
:: 80% of people disagree with the statement "I just want to have fun on holiday: I don't really care about the locals and their environment".
